I really wasn't at the convention for TOO long due to being tired from Phoenix Comicon. Forgive any crankiness due to the face I hadn't recovered one con before I went to another (and did panels at both) I woke up Friday morning not wanting to go ANYWHERE but I made the best of it.
The good
-Flagstaff is BEAUTIFUL! I've never stopped and stayed there before, and I definitely want to come back just for a mini vacation. (and for snowy/foresty cosplay photoshoots!)
-I love the programming guides and badges. We even got special SunaCosu badges!! How cool is that? :) Although, I was surprised that they weren't ready when we arrived, but that was taken care of quickly.
-Staff was easy find when we needed help with our events. (I am so sorry if I wasn't around all the time! but the events still went on at their correct times with no issues)
-The rooms were nice and large! I loved the ballroom and the connected green room - I bet it was great for the masquerade (although I didn't stay to see it)
-KATIE BAIR!! It was nice to be able to talk with her so much at a small con where she wasn't busy. We love Katie to death~~~
-Despite being a small vendor's room, we bought quite a few things! There was some great merchandise and artwork in there. :) I know more artists that want come out, so I hope there is more space for them next year!
-The Quality Inn hotel was AWESOME. Inexpensive, free breakfast and intarwebs, super nice staff, great view, etc.
-We were close to so many restaurants and Target!
Room for improvement
-We did 2 panels at the con. They are very visual panels, and we even show videos, but the projector only worked for about 5 minutes before overheating! We made due with our panels, but it was very disappointing to not have a working projector as promised.
-The lack of proper air conditioning in the building. >.< WOW! It was horrible and part of the reason we did not stick around long or want to be in costume there. The "swamp coolers" or whatever just make it more humid, I think, so it felt gross in there. I'm glad you guys aren't using this location next year but the next place needs proper AC (not sure how common this is up there but it's pretty important for an event like this.) Ah I guess this isn't Flagstaff's usual June weather? Well all the same. It was hot.
-The date...was...horrible...but I know how this happened and you guys already know this and will change it next year. :)
This suggestion may be pointless at this point, but I think this con would have done better to begin as a 1 or 2 day event. It would have been affordable and programming could be fuller. I can only think of a handful of Phoenix-area locals (besides those hosting events, ie, SunaCosu, CZP, the Elevens, etc) that attended and I'm not sure Flagstaff anime fans are a big enough group to support such a big event. But who knows, date change and better promotion might make next year more successful. GOOD LUCK!
